Sperm Donation
What is Sperm Donation?
Sperm donation refers to sperm collection procedure from relevant donors (sperm banks) for the couples failing to have pregnancy in normal ways for any reason occurred during or following the birth. Although sperm donation is mostly preferred by the couples failing to receive sperms in azoospermia biopsy procedures (sperm failure), single women or lesbian couples also apply to this procedure.
Who are eligible for Sperm Donation?
• The patients suffering undescended testis and damaged sperms due to lack of on-time surgery
• The patients with damaged sperms due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy
• The patients with damaged testis due to previous inflammatory diseases/mumps
• The patients failing to have testis or generate sperms due to traumatic, genetic or other diseases
• The patients suffering repetitive failures in IVF treatments and inadequate sperm quality
• The patients carrying risk for the babies due to inbreeding
• The single ladies or lesbian couples
How is the sperm donation performed?
If only the sperms shall be collected from prospective mother through sperm donation, the uterus area shall be prepared for this procedure. If insemination (IUI- intrauterine insemination) is planned, then natural development of the egg is monitored or hatching needle is applied by developing one or two eggs with a low dosage medication. The sperm sample collected from the donor within 34-36 hours following the hatching needle application shall be prepared in a special ambient and injected to the uterus area of prospective mother.
If IVF treatment is preferred, the prospective mothers shall be prepared accordingly. By the second or third day of menstrual period, the egg developing needle is applied around the belly. This procedure lasts for 7 to 12 days in average depending on the patient. Regular ultrasound procedures and blood tests are required during this period. As the eggs are developed sufficiently in terms of quantity and size, the egg maturing needle is applied. Following vaccination, the egg samples shall be collected by ultrasound procedure, which approximately takes 5 to 10 minutes.
The sperm sample collected from donor by the egg sampling procedure is also kept in the laboratory. Fertilization is implemented by injecting a sperm per egg. The developing embryos are then monitored in the laboratory and transferred to the uterus of prospective mother by the fifth day. Although the applicant couples find donors, the sperm bank is preferred frequently in this procedure. Sperm selection is made in accordance with the treatment and the requirements of prospective mothers.
Sperm Donation Treatment Process
You shall be informed in detail on the examinations and tests required prior to treatment.
The Tests Required from Prospective Mother:
FSH, LH, E2, PRL and AMH tests required to be conducted during the 2nd or 3rd day in menstrual cycle of prospective mother
Pelvic USG and HSG radiography for assessing the uterus of prospective mother
TSH, T3, T4, Fasting Blood Glucose, Urea, SGPT and SGOT
HbsAg, Anti-HBC total, Anti-HCV, HIV and VDRL tests
Blood Group Analysis
The Tests Required from Prospective Father:
Blood Group Analysis
Spermiogram Analysis (recommended after 3-day of sexual abstinence)
HbsAg, Anti-HBC total, Anti-HCV, HIV and VDRL tests
FSH, LH, Testosterone and TESE Report
After the tests and examinations are assessed by our doctors, a special treatment program is scheduled for you. The treatment process and medication dosage are determined by our doctors in accordance with ultrasound results.
Medication is required for approximately 2 weeks (13 or 15 days) in donation therapy. The treatment starts with egg developing medications during second or third day of the mother’s menstrual period. The egg samples are collected within 12 or 14 days following treatment. The hatching needle is applied in 36 hours prior to sampling procedure. The collected eggs are then fertilized with the sperms received from relevant donor depending on the blood group.
The embryos fertilized within 5 days following egg donation are then transferred to the mother’s uterus, which is a painless procedure. The pregnancy test is performed and relevant results are obtained within 12 days upon transfer procedure.
How the donors are selected for sperm donation?
In our center, the sperm samples supplied from licensed sperm banks in abroad as required by applicable legislation in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Therefore, the sperms collected for donation purposes are supplied from the sperm banks located in various countries such as USA and Denmark.
The donors are scanned against genetic diseases causing serious health problems on the baby and infectious diseases inherited to the baby through donated sperms. A comprehensive scanning program is implemented with the jaundice tests (Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C), HIV (AIDS), the tests for infectious diseases including Syphilis, Cytomegalovirus or Chlamydia, the genetic diseases such as Thalassemia (Anemia) and Karyotype (chromosome) analysis.
The couples intending to proceed with their donor would also receive treatment in our center if compliance criteria are met (in terms of sperm quality and infectious diseases)
How the donors are selected exclusively for you?
Donor matching is the key phase during donation process. Since we have a wide donor pool, we are able to contact with relevant donors resembling your appearance and habit.
