PGT – Gender Selection

What is gender selection (PGD)? Who are eligible?

In accordance with recently amended regulations, the PGD procedure is not performed for gender determination purposes throughout Cyprus. PGD is implemented for genetic scanning purposes only. However, this procedure is legal in Georgia.

Gender selection (also known as gender determination) is a process determining the baby’s gender prior to actual pregnancy. Gender determination gives exact results through IVF and genetic diagnosis methods. This procedure allows couples to have a child in intended gender.

PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) is a genetic scanning method used to determine gender with 100% accuracy for the embryos developed through in-vitro fertilization. As the most efficient method used worldwide, gender determination via PGD brings success scientifically at 99.9% or 100%.

Gender determination procedure has similar basic steps with in-vitro fertilization. The embryos are specified as male or female by genetic screening in addition to IVF steps. Regardless of the accuracy provided by this procedure, the half of processed embryos shall not have the intended gender statistically. The gender would be exactly opposite to what you preferred or the embryos in intended gender would not be healthy.

Advantages of PGD

  • Increases the success rate in IVF treatment
  • Increases clinical pregnancy
  • Decreases the risk of miscarriage
  • Decreases the medical conclusion requirement of pregnancy
  • Decreases multiple pregnancy
  • Relieves financial and psychological burden arising from IVF procedures with repetitive failures
  • Enables the parents to prefer the gender

The Diseases Scanned by PGD:

Single gene disorder, anemia (ß-thalassemia), sickle cell, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), congenital hearing loss, cystic fibrosis, Nijmegen syndrome, Leigh’s syndrome, Pompe disease, galactosemia, Niemann Pick, autopalatodigital syndrome, RH disorder, MTHFR, Prothrombin and Factor V Leyden

Chromosomal disorders: Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, Patau syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, Turner syndrome and further chromosomal disorders

Histocompatibility Testing: HLA Typecasting

Genetic Analysis

Who are eligible for Genetic Analysis?
– The couples bearing risk due to genetic diseases
– The increasing risk of genetic disease (especially of Down syndrome) in the baby due to the mother’s elder age

Advantages of Genetic Analysis
We are able to detect numerous genetic diseases by analyzing all chromosomes via PGD. By means of genetic technologies, gender is selected at 100%.
